With grain prices dipping after several years of escalation and net farm income down by nearly a third in 2014, land-renting farmers in the Midwestern United States are left in a bind as landowners seek payments by March 1.
Midwest grain prices are at a four-year low following the Farm Belt boom of recent years. US farm incomes will drop 32 percent this year, according to the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), the lowest level since 2009. Net farm income topped out at $129 billion in 2013, and is expected to drop to $74 billion, the USDA reported this month.

This photo of Ira Hayes was taken when the 19-year-old Pima Indian was getting ready to jump during Marine Corps Paratroop School in 1943. He qualified as a parachutist on November 30 and was promoted to private first class.

Another photograph of Ira Hayes was taken during World War II—this time by Joe Rosenthal on February 23, 1945. The Battle of Iwo Jima raged from February 19 to March 26. Hayes was one of the men captured in Rosenthal’s iconic photograph of the five Marines and one Navy corpsman raising the flag on Iwo Jima. Now part of U.S. Navy records held in the National Archives, it is one of the most famous war photographs.

US energy giant Chevron is terminating its operations in Romania due to poor exploration results and prolonged protests by environmentalists.The withdrawal from this fracking project will mark the end of the company’s shale gas exploration in Europe.
Because of falling oil prices and underwhelming results in Europe, Chevron is now switching its focus to home soil. Last month, the company announced it was halting it projects in Poland, and terminated shale-gas agreements in Lithuania and Ukraine.

Slavery simulation game draws criticism for making oppression ‘fun’
The educational learning program in question is called ‘Flight to Freedom’ and chronicles the experiences of a 14-year-old black slave called Lucy King, who works on a slave plantation in Kentucky. Users have to try and help her escape to the north of the country, where slavery has been abolished.
Upon learning about the game, after she received an email, recommending its use to coincide with Black History month, Rafranz Davis, who is an Instructional Technology Specialist for Schools, took to social media to vent her disgust.
“You would like to be a slave? The idea that a game could give a person a sense of what it felt like to fear for your life, to know everything that could possibly happen to you, which could be rape, a beating, death, mutilation is preposterous,” she told RT.
